Euclid Space Telescope Begins Mission to Explore the Dark Universe

The European Space Agency’s Euclid observatory, a space telescope designed to explore the mysterious realm of the dark universe, was successfully launched on Saturday by SpaceX. The observatory is now on its way to its ultimate destination, approximately 1 million miles away in the neighborhood of the Webb Space Telescope. It will take about a month to reach its position, followed by two more months of preparation before it begins its ambitious six-year survey in the fall.

Flight controllers in Germany celebrated the successful launch nearly an hour after liftoff, as the telescope established contact and confirmed its status. The director general of the European Space Agency, Josef Aschbacher, expressed his excitement and anticipation for the mission’s journey.

Euclid, named after the ancient Greek mathematician, will observe billions of galaxies, covering over one-third of the sky. Its primary goal is to pinpoint the location and shape of galaxies up to 10 billion light-years away, providing insights into the dark energy and dark matter that constitute a major portion of the universe and contribute to its expansion.

Currently, scientists only have a comprehensive understanding of about 5% of the universe, which includes stars, planets, and other observable entities. The remaining 95% remains a mystery, making it a significant frontier in modern physics. The European Space Agency’s science director, Carole Mundell, expressed hope that the Euclid mission will push forward our understanding of this enigmatic dark universe.

The highly anticipated 3D map of the cosmos created by Euclid will bridge both space and time, aiming to explain the evolution of the dark universe and the accelerating expansion it is undergoing. With its precise measurements, Euclid will provide unprecedented insights into dark energy and dark matter.

Roman Space Telescope scheduled for launch in 2027

Euclid is equipped with a 1.2-meter telescope and two scientific instruments capable of observing the cosmos in visible light and the near infrared. It stands 15 feet tall and features a large sunshield to maintain the necessary low temperatures for the sensitive instruments.

NASA, a contributor to Euclid’s infrared detectors, is also planning its own mission to further investigate dark energy and dark matter. The Roman Space Telescope, scheduled for launch in 2027, will join the quest for a better understanding of these phenomena. Additionally, officials mentioned the possibility of collaboration with the US-European Webb telescope in this pursuit.

Originally planned to launch from French Guiana using a Russian rocket, the Euclid mission was redirected to a SpaceX launch from Cape Canaveral due to severed ties between the European and Russian space agencies. The decision to switch launch providers was made to avoid a two-year-plus delay caused by waiting for Europe’s next-generation Ariane rocket, which has yet to fly.
