Virgin Galactic Completes First Commercial Space Flight with Italian Astronauts

Virgin Galactic, the space company founded by Richard Branson, achieved a significant milestone as it successfully conducted its inaugural commercial flight to the edge of space. The mission involved two Italian air force officers and an aerospace engineer from the National Research Council of Italy, along with a Virgin Galactic instructor and two pilots, aboard the VSS Unity spaceplane.

Taking off from Spaceport America in New Mexico, the flight reached an altitude of approximately 80km (50 miles) above the desert. The VSS Unity safely returned to the launch site by gliding back and landing on the runway. Known as Galactic 01, the flight lasted about 75 minutes and marked a major breakthrough for Virgin Galactic Holding Inc, which has been working towards commercial space travel for nearly two decades.

The success of this mission brings Virgin Galactic closer to realizing its vision of space tourism. The company has sold approximately 800 tickets for its commercial flights, with some purchased over a decade ago. Passengers on board experience moments of weightlessness and get to witness Earth’s curvature during the suborbital journey.

Aside from the tourism aspect, the flight also served scientific purposes. The crew conducted experiments to collect biometric data, measure cognitive performance, and study the behavior of liquids and solids in microgravity.

Following this achievement, Virgin Galactic plans to continue its commercial space flights, with Galactic 02 scheduled for August and a plan to offer monthly flights in the future.

Virgin Galactic faces competition in the suborbital tourism sector from Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin. However, Blue Origin’s operations have been temporarily halted since an accident during an unmanned flight. Branson’s Virgin Orbit also recently announced the cessation of its operations after a mission failure in the United Kingdom.

Branson’s venture into space exploration represents a significant step forward in the private space industry, offering opportunities for individuals to experience space travel firsthand.
