Elon Musk has officially launched his highly anticipated artificial intelligence startup, xAI. The company aims to challenge major U.S. technology firms, including ChatGPT, by developing an alternative AI solution. Comprised of engineers from renowned tech companies, the xAI team will be led by Musk himself, who is already known as the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and owner of Twitter.
Musk has been a vocal advocate for AI regulation and has expressed concerns about its potential for “civilizational destruction.” During a recent Twitter Spaces event, he outlined his vision for creating a safer AI. Rather than programming explicit morality, xAI will focus on developing a “maximally curious” AI that seeks to understand the true nature of the universe. Musk believes this approach will promote AI safety and prioritize humanity’s interests.
Furthermore, Musk made a bold prediction that superintelligence, AI surpassing human capabilities, will emerge within the next five to six years. It’s worth noting that Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, but stepped down from its board in 2018. OpenAI has received investment from Microsoft.
The website for xAI announced an upcoming Twitter Spaces event on July 14. Notable members of the xAI team include Igor Babuschkin, formerly from Google’s DeepMind; Tony Wu, a former Google employee; Christian Szegedy, a research scientist at Google; and Greg Yang, who previously worked at Microsoft.
Advisory support to the xAI team
In March, Musk registered a separate firm named X.AI Corp in Nevada, with himself as the sole director and Jared Birchall, the managing director of Musk’s family office, as a secretary. Musk had earlier revealed plans to launch TruthGPT, an AI dedicated to maximum truth-seeking and competition to Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI.
Generative AI gained significant attention with the launch of OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, preceding the releases of Bard and Bing AI. Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety, will provide advisory support to the xAI team, focusing on AI risks.
While xAI operates independently from X Corp, it will maintain close collaboration with Twitter, Tesla, and other companies. The startup is actively recruiting experienced engineers and researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to its website.
