Could ‘Bond Villain’ DNA Be the Key to a Breakthrough in Cancer Treatment?

Scientists have identified DNA fragments that aid the spread of cancer, similar to Bond villains. These tiny agents are also responsible for causing tumors to develop resistance to anti-cancer drugs.The researchers stated that the discovery of ecDNA (extrachromosomal DNA) could bring a revolution in treating some of the most aggressive tumors affecting people today.

Professor Paul Mischel of California’s Stanford university, one of the leaders of the programme said, ‘’ “The discovery of how these bits of DNA behave inside our bodies is a gamechanger. We believe they are responsible for a large number of the more advanced, most serious cancers affecting people today. If we can block their activities, we can block the spread of these cancers.”

Genetic villains are made up of minuscule loops of DNA

Minuscule loops of DNA that survive outside of chromosomes make up these genetic villains. Chromosomes are the primary storage of genetic material in our cells. They determine our characteristics and direct the growth of our bodies. Although we have known about the existence of these smaller units for years. It is only recently that researchers uncovered their significance in cancer.

Stanford university geneticist Howard Chang said,’’We have found that ecDNA act as cancer-causing genes that have somehow separated themselves from a person’s chromosomes. Meanwhile,they have started to behave in ways that circumvent the normal rules of genetics,”

The scientists have likened the behavior of these DNA fragments to the villains in a James Bond movie. In the beginning of the movie, there are explosions, killings, and other disasters happening. However, the cause and responsible party are not clear. Eventually, the villain is Disclosed, who is the mastermind behind all the chaos. Similarly, these DNA fragments play a pivotal role in the spread of cancer and its drug resistance.

The breakthrough is a part of the Cancer Grand Challenges, a major initiative supported by Cancer Research UK and the US National Cancer Institute. Its purpose is to finance multidisciplinary research programs that could create new ways of combating cancer.
