Connectivity Innovation Network’s Wi-Fi Breakthrough

Large-Area Wi-Fi Project Reaches Milestone with 10Mbps Speeds Over 500m Range

The Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN) has reached a significant milestone in its Large-Area Wi-Fi (LAWiFi) project, showcasing its rapid deployable Wi-Fi system at Fire and Rescue NSW. Developed through a collaboration between the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, and with support from Pivotel, NBN Co, Real Time Access Communications, and the NSW Telco Authority. This project aims to provide high-speed internet access over vast areas.

Overcoming Wi-Fi Protocol Limitations

The LAWifi project addresses the limitations of traditional Wi-Fi protocols, which restrict their reach to around 25 meters. To achieve its goal of supporting 100 users in a 2km x 2km area, the project seeks to extend the range and capabilities of Wi-Fi. The recent demonstration, marking the project’s halfway point, showcased impressive results, with speeds of 10Mbps achieved over a range of 500 x 500 meters.

Potential Applications and Partnerships

LAWiFi’s innovative protocol stack has also been tested in areas as large as 1km x 1km. This technology holds promise for various sectors, including agriculture, remote education, mining, and emergency services. The CIN, in collaboration with the NSW Telco Authority, aims to demonstrate the system’s capabilities in emergency services and regional community communications. This advancement could significantly improve communication, coordination, and access to critical resources during natural disasters.

As the project progresses, it continues to explore its potential applications and partnerships. In the near future, the CIN plans to unveil the full range of capabilities offered by the LAWiFi system, further revolutionizing large-area Wi-Fi access.
