The sails, standing at a towering 123 feet (37.5 meters) when unfolded, are composed of the same robust materials used in wind turbines.

By harnessing wind power to complement the ship’s engines, it is projected that this innovation could potentially reduce a cargo ship’s lifetime emissions by a significant 30%. Jan Dieleman, the President of Cargill Ocean Transportation, acknowledged the maritime industry’s commitment to decarbonization, highlighting how rapidly the sector is evolving.

The Pyxis Ocean’s voyage, expected to last around six weeks, embodies a technology birthed from the innovation of UK-based firm BAR Technologies. The company emerged from Sir Ben Ainslie’s 2017 America’s Cup team, renowned as the ‘Formula One of the seas’.

John Cooper, the head of BAR Technologies and a former member of the Formula One team McLaren, emphasized the profound impact of this venture on the environment. Cooper anticipated that this voyage would catalyze a paradigm shift within the maritime sector, predicting that half of all new-build ships by 2025 will integrate wind propulsion due to substantial fuel savings and carbon reduction.

Wind-related technologies are gradually gaining traction

Notably, the WindWings are manufactured in China due to cost constraints linked to imported steel in the UK. Despite this limitation, experts maintain that wind power holds promise as the industry strives to slash its annual CO2 emissions of 837 million tonnes.

Dr. Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher at the University of Manchester’s Tyndall Centre, stressed that operational enhancements on existing vessels, such as retrofitting sails, kites, and rotors, are vital until zero-carbon fuels become widely available. Wind-related technologies are gradually gaining traction, with the number of ships employing such systems doubling over the past year.

However, the industry’s diversification and scale make a single decarbonization solution challenging to pinpoint. Even as the shipping landscape evolves, there may be constraints to adopting wind technology across all vessels, such as interference with container unloading.
