Meta Platforms Seeks Injunction Against Privacy Breach Fine in Norway

Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is taking legal action in Norway to halt a fine imposed by the country’s data regulator for violating user privacy. The fine, which amounts to 1 million crowns ($147,087) per day, was levied due to the company’s data harvesting practices and use of behavioral advertising.

Meta Platforms intends to request consent from users in the European Union and the European Economic Area before engaging in behavioral advertising. The company is seeking a temporary injunction against the fine, which is in effect until November 3.

The Norwegian regulator, Datatilsynet, is defending the fine and maintains that users’ rights are currently being violated due to the lack of user consent. The case’s outcome could have implications beyond Norway, potentially affecting data privacy regulations across Europe.
