Biden Administration Plans to Restrict Chinese Companies’ Access to US Cloud Computing Services

Biden administration is preparing to impose restrictions on Chinese companies’ utilization of US cloud-computing services. The Wall Street Journal reported that under the proposed rule, American cloud-service providers like Amazon and Microsoft would be required to obtain permission from the US government before offering cloud computing services to Chinese customers that involve advanced artificial intelligence chips.

The US Department of Commerce is expected to implement this restriction in the coming weeks as part of an expansion of its semiconductor export control policy, which was introduced in October.

At the time of reporting, the Commerce Department, Microsoft, and Amazon had not responded to requests for comment outside of business hours.

In response to the ongoing dispute with the US over access to high-tech microchips, China has announced its intention to regulate the export of certain metals widely used in the semiconductor industry. China stated that these controls aim to protect national security and its own interests. Exporters will now be required to seek permission to ship specific gallium and germanium products.
