Chloe McCardel – 36 years old Australian woman has set a new record for swimming English Channel. She completed her 44th crossing, the most ever by a single swimmer.
The previous record was held by British Swimmer Alison Streeter. McCardel seems excited, and said, I’m buzzing right now, I feel like I could go again and swim the channel again tomorrow, although that’s not a very good idea.’’
She arrived at Pointe de La Courte Dun in France after 10 hours from Kent on Wednesday. Talking about the long journey she said, she felt ‘’ really good’’. Though, she was battling breathing difficulties caused by a chest infection in the past several days.
She explain to BBC, ‘’ It’s been a tough journey, but I’ve persisted.’’
Mc Cardel also said that she waited ‘’ a long time to celebrate this swim.’’
She has been very thankful to the people and everyone who supported her in this journey.
McCardel said, ‘’ I’m so thankful, I’ve had so much support from people across the UK and Australia to get me through this last 12 years.’’
‘’so many people helped along the way to make my dreams come true and hopefully I can inspire the next generation of open water swimmers and young people to go after their dreams.’’
She had brought with her magnum of English sparkling wine to celebrate her happiness on her boat.
Women in Sports
Ms. McCardel believes that women are not celebrated, the way they should. Speaking before her journey she said: ‘’ I think sometimes women don’t get recognized for their achievements as much as they should.’’
Women in sports are an inspiration for young girls and other women. Despite, the hardships and struggles, women contribute a lot to sports and other fields. Ms. McCardel believes that they must be role models for other girls. She wanted to be looked up to as an inspiration.
‘’ To have female role models has been amazing for me and I hope I can be that for other women and girls’ she said.
Back in 2015, she made a non-stop triple crossing of the Channel, and it took her almost 37 hours. She holds the record for longest solo ocean swim-77 miles (124km) from South Eleuthero Island to Nassau in the Bahamas.
She grew up in Sydney, despite having a chest infection, she went ahead with her record-breaking swim which is amazing.
