The federal government of Australia has an agreement with the US space agency. It will launch to the Moon as part of the NASA space mission. The semi-autonomous rover made by Australian researchers and businesses to send on a lunar mission by 2026.
The Australian government will provide $50 for the development of the rover. Which will collect lunar soil from space containing oxygen.
The government said, the ‘’foundation service rover’’ could bring humans a step closer to developing a sustainable human presence off the earth. It would be on an exploration mission.
Creation of jobs Opportunities
With this new announcement, people are hopeful for new opportunities and jobs. Prime Minister Scott Morrison talked about government spending since July 2018. The government has invested more than $700 million in the civil space industry. He said,
‘’ this mission to the Moon is just one exciting way that we can create opportunity, and jobs for the future, and our government will ensure Australians reap the benefits.’’
He added,
‘’ this is an incredible opportunity for Australia to succeed in the global space sector. It is central to our government’s vision to secure more jobs and a larger share of the growing space economy. ‘’
‘’By 2030, we want to triple the size of our space sector, adding $12 billion in our economy. Moreover, creating up 20,000 new, high-skilled jobs, providing more opportunities for Australians and industries.’’
Applications from businesses and research organizations
Later this year, Australian research organizations and businesses will be able to apply to be part of this project. The federal government will provide the amount through its‘’ Trailblazer program’’.
Upon success, the applicant will be ‘’ expected to provide a financial contribution to the project’’. According to a different source, the rover development and deployment system will need to weigh less than 20 kilograms.
Melissa Price, Minister of Science and technology considered it a historical achievement for Australia.
He added,
‘’With our experiment in robotics technology, NASA wants to partner with us on this project to the Moon, creating our lunar history.’’
‘’As well as putting Australia front and center for scientific discoveries, our $50 million in support gives Australian businesses and researchers the opportunity to contribute to NASA’s mission to the Moon and beyond.’’
Further, it will also help in building Australian space sector capacity. Meanwhile, it’s a great inspiration for young people to enter into careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematic.
