Atlassian has reached an agreement to acquire Loom, a privately held video messaging platform, for approximately $975 million. This acquisition is aimed at strengthening Atlassian’s team collaboration tools and tapping into the growing demand driven by the adoption of hybrid work models.
The integration of Loom’s technology into Atlassian software, including popular collaboration tools like Jira and Confluence, will enable users to incorporate video into their workflows more seamlessly. Loom’s platform, which boasts over 25 million users worldwide, empowers users to record their screens, camera, and microphone to create and share videos for enhanced communication and collaboration.
Under the terms of the deal, Atlassian will pay approximately $880 million in cash and the remaining amount in shares for the acquisition. The transaction is anticipated to close in the quarter ending March 2024 and will be financed using Atlassian’s existing cash reserves.
While the acquisition is expected to bring significant benefits, Atlassian has acknowledged that it may dilute operating margins in the fiscal years ending in June 2024 and 2025. This strategic move aligns with Atlassian’s commitment to enhancing its product offerings and capitalizing on the evolving needs of the workforce in the era of remote and hybrid work.
