Ukrainian budget airline – SkyUp – is launching a new uniform with a new vision for female flight attendants this fall.
The new look consists of a loose and breathable orange pant suit, a blue silk scarf, and white Nike sneakers.
Shying away from the tight skirt and heels, the uniform aims to prioritize comfort and utility for the flight attendants.
According to Marianna Grygorash, Head of SkyUp Airlines Marketing Department, the uniform was changed to keep up with the times.
”We found out that despite the fact that the image of a female flight attendant is very romanticized, their job demands a lot of physical training,” Grygorash said.
FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION
SkyUp decided to revamp the uniforms after collecting feedback from flight attendants.
Interviews with their flight attendants “became the starting point for working on a new image.”
Alexandrina Denysenko, a senior flight attendant with SkyUp, says wearing heels while working during flights can be very uncomfortable.
“Shoes on heels look beautiful, I do not argue with that, but feet suffer and swell by the end of the flight. Sneakers are absolutely cool,” Denysenko said
She also argued that the current uniform may become a hindrance in the event of an emergency.
“God forbid, but if a crew has to do a landing in water and an evacuation, heels can damage the ladder and it won’t be very comfortable to swim in a skirt,” she added.
Olga Tsaregradskaya, the curator of the project, said that the airline worked with Ukrainian fashion designers to build the uniforms.
Kyiv-based fashion line – GUDU – developed the orange pants and blazer set.
Meanwhile, accessories and crafts line – Gunia Project – developed the blue silk scarf.
The airline is no longer requiring their female crew to wear the ‘old’ uniform.
SkyUp is launching the news uniforms next week on October 22.
WHAT ABOUT THE GUYS UNIFORM?
Grygorash said the company also has plans to launch a new uniform for male crew.
It will have a light suit instead of a vest, a T-shirt instead of a collared shirt, and black Nike sneakers.
