New Appointments Strengthen Australian Agricultural Research Commission

In a significant development today, two accomplished individuals have been appointed to the Commission for International Agricultural Research, alongside five reappointed Commissioners, including the Chair, Ms. Fiona Simson. These appointments aim to enhance Australia’s contributions to global agricultural research and development programs conducted through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

Dr. Michelle Freeman

A veteran in senior policy and management roles within Australia’s forestry industry, is one of the newly appointed Commissioners. Dr. Freeman currently serves as the President of Forestry Australia, a collaborative organization that brings together over 1,100 experts and scientists engaged in forest and natural resource management across the country.

Ms. Lukina Lukin

The second appointee, boasts extensive commercial expertise in ethically and sustainably sourced seafood—an area of increasing importance as many nations rely on the ocean for food and income security. She is the owner and Managing Director of Dinko Seafood, a fishing business based in Port Lincoln, South Australia.

Ms. Fiona Simson

Who has been instrumental in leading the Commission, has been reappointed for her second three-year term as the Chair. Alongside her, Dr. Beth Woods, Professor Lindsay Falvey, and Mr. Tony York have also been reappointed for a second term. The Commission is further enriched by the inclusion of the recently appointed ACIAR CEO, Professor Wendy Umberger, as a Commissioner.

This announcement marks the culmination of the tireless efforts of the outgoing Commissioners, Ms. Su McCluskey and Dr. Sasha Courville, who have served two terms and continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to sustainable agricultural development.
