Astronomers have made a remarkable discovery by identifying two peculiar galaxies that exhibit characteristics of rare polar ring galaxies. These findings were made using data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope array, located in Western Australia.
Polar ring galaxies are unique cosmic structures characterized by a central disk of stars, gas, and dust enclosed by a perpendicular ring, resembling a frisbee within a hula hoop. These galaxies are exceedingly rare, making up only about 0.1 percent of known galaxies.
Nathan Deg, an astrophysicist from Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, analyzed data from ASKAP and identified two galaxies, NGC 4632 and NGC 6156, exhibiting the characteristics of polar ring galaxies.
Polar ring galaxies are challenging to find, and discovering two of them in a sample of 600 galaxies was unexpected.The potential discovery of these galaxies could help scientists understand how polar ring galaxies form and evolve, shedding light on these enigmatic structures.
