Neopets, the virtual pet and gaming website launched in 1999, is set to make a comeback after years of decline. Originally popular for its cartoon pets, social features, and games, the site faltered after being acquired by Viacom in 2005, leading to numerous issues and a dwindling user base.
Now, Neopets is promising a “new era” with $4 million in funding to revamp the site and reintroduce 50 classic games on July 25th. In its heyday during the mid-2000s, Neopets boasted 25 million users, rivaling the popularity of virtual pets like Tamagotchis. However, by 2017, the user base had shrunk to just 100,000 daily users.
One of the main challenges for Neopets was its heavy reliance on Adobe Flash, which modern browsers and Apple devices do not support. With the upcoming remake, the site aims to address these technical limitations and provide renewed functionality.
Fans of Neopets are cautiously optimistic about the revival. Krista, who runs a Neopets-focused YouTube channel, expressed excitement about the return of classic games, which the community has long requested. The convenience of being able to play a quick game and then carry on with daily life is seen as a major draw for users.
Recent management buyout
Neopets highlighted that a recent management buyout has made the website an independent business, free from previous corporate constraints. This newfound independence allows the Neopets Team to focus on improving the game and the overall experience for the community.
The anticipated “new era” will commence with a refreshed homepage on July 20th, followed by the reintroduction of 50 classic games five days later. Neopets aims to fix many beloved games in the future as well. While the site’s resurgence may attract a mix of former and new users seeking nostalgia and comfort, the community is hopeful for a successful revitalization.
