Aussie Broadband’s IT System Glitch Causes Thousands of Excess Data Usage Warnings

A technical glitch in Aussie Broadband’s IT system led to the accidental sending of thousands of excessive data usage warnings to customers in a single day last year. The incident, which occurred on April 16, 2022, affected 3,248 customers and resulted in the provider sending out 5,287 inaccurate usage notifications. The details of the incident were outlined in an investigation report recently published by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), despite being dated October 2022.

The ACMA investigation was initiated following a customer’s complaint, prompting the authority to examine the matter. The investigation determined that Aussie Broadband had breached a clause of the Telecommunications Consumer Protections (TCP) code.

According to the investigation report, Aussie Broadband confirmed that the recipients of the erroneous usage notifications were customers who had entered into agreements for broadband plans with included data allowances. The company explained that the IT system fault caused the system to incorrectly register instances of customers exceeding their data usage when, in fact, they had not.

The incident highlights the importance of accurate and reliable data usage monitoring systems for telecommunications providers. While Aussie Broadband has acknowledged the IT system fault and the issuance of incorrect notifications, the publication of the investigation report by ACMA serves to bring transparency and awareness to the issue, allowing for appropriate remedial measures to be taken.
