The modernization of My Health Record will cost $429 million

According to budget documents, the Australian government will invest $429 million over the next two years to modernize its My Health Record electronic medical record system. The funding will be used to create a new national repository platform to facilitate easier, more secure sharing of data across all healthcare settings, as well as to improve the sharing of pathology and diagnostic imaging information. Some of the money will also be used to increase allied health professionals’ adoption of the system, as the government’s review found low adoption rates outside of general practitioners and pharmacies. This investment brings the total cost of My Health Record to over $1 billion, factoring in previous investments. In addition, the Australian Digital Health Agency will receive $325.7 million over four years to become an ongoing entity to strengthen Medicare, and to conduct a review of its enabling legislation to ensure it remains fit for purpose.
