Julian Hill with 1.8m likes on his videos is the most popular Australian politician on TikTok. The labor PM says, politicians don’t have to be boring and his videos have proofed it. Also, Scott Morrison has joined TikTok. Julian Hill is a federal Labor PM from Victoria that you might not hear of if you are not a user of the popular platform TikTok. That is famous for music videos and viral dances. He comfortably beats the Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, an early adopter of the video-sharing app with 103,000 followers into second place.
Julian Hill’s most popular Video
Hill’s most popular video to date, with 1.1m views is a three-minute clip in which he describes Scott Morrison’s ‘’loose relationship with the truth’’ in a speech to parliament. He has recently joined the app. It was suggested by Sam Richards, son of a family friend who works with PM’s office. Richards talks to Guardian and said, ‘’ I was interested in (him joining) because he had a lot of social media platforms. We started putting videos of his speeches and all that on there and it started to take off.’’ Richards and his friends are big TikTok users and the platform appeals because the algorithm ‘’ tailors (Videos) to what people want to see.’’
Hills also says that in the future he will post a ‘’wide range of material’’ from parliamentary speeches, while sometimes ‘’algorithm can be mysterious.’’ He said, ‘’ you’ve got to communicate with people where they are. A growing number of people engage with social media through TikTok. You have to do them the courtesy of showing up and treating them as intelligent.’’
Rules set by Julian Hills
Hills has set a rule for himself, which is ‘’ be authentic, don’t dance, or sing or do stunts.’’ Also, he believes that what he shares through TikTok is no different from the content share on other social media platforms. Whether it is in a parliament or somewhere outside. Moreover, he thinks he tackles all-important big issues on TikTok such as robot debt, Climate Change, Jobs, visa, and immigration issues. Though there is a lot of ‘’silly stuff’’ on TikTok politics is a serious business. Which Hills believe doesn’t always be boring and unengaging. He says, ‘’that’s the line tread.’’ He added, ‘’ great feedback when I’ve taken the time to explain a policy topic or the politics, as I see it, of what’s going on.’’
