Apple- much-awaited and promoted digital driver’s license feature is now delayed by 2022. The scheme was announce in September. Initially, it allows residents of US states to store IDs and Driver’s licenses inside the Apple Wallet app on their phone. However, there was a plan to initiate the scheme in other areas.
Meanwhile, the reason behind the delay was to make it more ‘’sole control’’ over how states roll out the feature. Also, reports say the new feature will come at a cost to the Taxpayer.
Contradictory Information
The first delay was notice on an update to Apple’s iOS 15 page, by website MacRumors. However, Apple did not provide a specific timeframe for the release of the new feature. Rather, it gives an early 2022 timeframe for the release.
Meanwhile, on the official page of the company’s site, the new feature page still shows the ID feature is coming in ‘’Late 2021.’’. There is a conflict of information regarding the release of this new feature.
Signed up States
According to BBC, Arizona, Georgia, Connecticut, Lowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah have signed up for the new feature. Furthermore, Apple said the company is in discussion with other US states. It offers the new feature national wide in the presentation in June.
Apple says, ‘’the ‘’the first location’’ to use the system will be airport-security checkpoints run by the Transportation security administration (TSA).’’
However, some users show privacy concerns regarding handing over smartphones to police or security officials.
Meanwhile, Apple says users do not need to hand over their phones to officials for the system to work for airport security. Though, it remains unclear if or how it works for the uses of ID. Such as if the police stop the drivers.
Additionally, lots of questions to be answer regarding this new feature. Which is expected to be given till early 2022.
