Michelle McGuinness Appointment as National Cyber Security Coordinator

The Australian Government has announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness as the new National Cyber Security Coordinator, effective February 26, 2024.McGuinness brings extensive experience to the role, having served for 30 years in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) in various positions both domestically and internationally.

Her most recent position was Deputy Director for Commonwealth Integration (DDCI) at the United States Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), where she advised the Director on strengthening collaboration and information-sharing among the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

“I am excited to get started and continue to ensure that Australia is best positioned to respond to the threats of the digital age,” McGuinness said in a statement. She also expressed her gratitude to the acting coordinator, Hamish Hansford, for his service and leadership during the past few months.

McGuinness replaces Air Commander Australia Darren Goldie, who stepped down after four months due to a “workplace matter.” The appointment follows the Albanese government’s launch of the National Office of Cyber Security (NOCS) in February 2023.

This initiative aims to strengthen Australia’s cyber resilience by synchronizing responses and protections against cyber incidents across Commonwealth agencies. NOCS played a crucial role in coordinating the response to the recent HWL Ebsworth data leak that impacted numerous government entities.

Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security, Clare O’Neil, welcomed McGuinness’s appointment, highlighting her extensive experience and dedication to national security. McGuinness is tasked with leading the charge in protecting Australia from major cyber threats and ensuring the nation is prepared to navigate the evolving digital landscape.
