Timorese workers to receive more support from Albanese Government

The Albanese Government has launched a new program to help Timorese workers who take part in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme (PALM). The program, which will cost $4 million, aims to enhance the social and reintegration benefits of PALM for the workers and their families.

PALM is a scheme that allows workers from Pacific countries and Timor-Leste to work in Australia for up to three years, mainly in the agriculture and hospitality sectors. It is designed to address labour shortages in Australia, while also providing income and skills for the workers.

According to the press release, the new program will work with the Timor-Leste government to offer reintegration support for the workers when they return to their home country. This will include assistance with financial literacy, employment and education opportunities. The program will also provide support for the workers’ families to cope with separation during their stay in Australia.

The press release states that PALM is vital for both Australia and Timor-Leste, as it creates jobs, opportunities and income for the workers, while also supporting Australian businesses and communities. It also claims that remittances from PALM workers are now the second largest non-aid source of income for Timor-Leste, after oil and gas.

The new program will be funded by Australia’s bilateral aid program in Timor-Leste over four years.
