5G, Vaccines and Drones among technologies to face larger national Security scrutiny, Scott Morrison

 Australia- Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia must balance the economic opportunities of critical technologies with great risks. Morrison’s government is to release a list of technologies that need extra ‘risk management’ for security. These Technologies include vaccines, drones, and artificial intelligence. Over national security risks, this technology will face firm scrutiny from the Australian government. Previously, three years ago, former politician Malcolm Turnbull’s government had blocked Chinese company Telco Huawei from Australia’s 5G network. The decision was made on security grounds. Meanwhile, before the Telco Huawei block, the Morrison government will release a list of nine types of technologies.

Critical Technologies

The Prime Minister, Scott Morrison says, the government wants to ‘’Balance the economic opportunities of critical technologies with their national security risks.’’

Wednesday’s shortlist of Critical Technologies includes Advance communications such as 5G and 6G- summaries areas that are ‘’most likely to impact on the national interest.’’ The Prime Minister has pledged to fund of almost $70m over 10 years to help ‘’ take our research to the world.’’ Also, wanted to make Australia the Quantum technology leader in the Indo-pacific region.

Further, Marise Payne, Foreign Minister has accused China and Russia of spreading misinformation. Though, Beijing denies these allegations calling them ‘’ completely rubbish.’’  

The Australian government has set four goals. Such as ensuring Australia Access to ‘’secure, reliable, and cost-effective technology, rather relying on ‘’limited suppliers that may pose ‘’ unacceptable risks to our national security.’’
