Woolworths Using Electric-Powered Delivery Trucks for a More Eco-Friendly Future

Woolworths have recently announced their fleet of delivery trucks are to be becoming increasingly eco-friendly over the coming years. This would mean that Australian supermarkets will see an influx of electric-powered delivery trucks replacing the diesel-fueled versions of the past.

As part of a sponsored project, 27 of these new electric vehicles (EVs) will be rolled out in the next few weeks in the Sydney CBD, Inner West, Sutherland Shire, St George region and the East Suburbs.

Woolworths stated that their current fleet of 1200 trucks will be phased out, and replaced with electric vehicles.

“The transition towards a low carbon future has never been more urgent, and our commitment to that cause is evident. We are taking action to replace our home delivery trucks with electric, fossil fuel-free equivalents by the end of the next seven years. This ambitious move is focused on building a brighter, sustainable future for the communities within Australia and for the planet as a whole,” Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci said.

Given minimal public EV infrastructure, the 27 new vehicles would be based in Sydney and operate out of Woolworths’ Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFC) in Mascot and Caringbah, where new EV charging ports have been put in place.
