Workers at Woodside Energy Group’s offshore gas platforms want to stop working from September 2. This comes after a disagreement with the company about pay and working conditions. These gas platforms provide gas for Australia’s biggest LNG plant.
In Australia, unions have to tell companies seven working days before they strike. But they can cancel the strike if they want to. A group called the Offshore Alliance, which includes the Maritime Union of Australia and Australian Workers’ Union, wants to strike. They’ve given notice to Woodside for a strike on September 2 unless the company meets their demands by Wednesday.
Woodside has been trying to avoid bargaining with the workers together, but now they might have to deal with a strike. A spokesperson for the Offshore Alliance said that Woodside left them no choice.
Woodside hasn’t said anything about this yet. Most of the workers at Woodside have agreed to do different types of strikes. The Fair Work Commission, which takes care of work issues in Australia, said they can do these strikes.
The Offshore Alliance also works with workers at Chevron’s Gorgon and Wheatstone gas facilities. These workers are deciding if they want to strike too. Woodside and Chevron together make about 10% of the world’s gas. People are worried that if there’s a strike, it could make gas prices go up in Europe and cause problems for buying and selling gas.
