Westpac has announced the hiring of Yianna Papanikolaou as chief transformation officer, in charge of the bank’s CORE initiative.
Papanikolaou will now oversee the national bank’s customer outcomes and risk excellence (CORE) initiative, which is part of the bank’s ‘Fix, Simplify, Perform’ strategy, which was put in place following APRA’s risk governance review.
Until now, Les Vance, Westpac’s group executive for financial crime and compliance, was in charge of the CORE, but he is slated to leave later this year, according to the bank’s quarterly results.

Papanikolaou just joined Westpac as the group transformation office’s general manager.
Prior to joining Westpac, Papanikolaou worked for Deutsche Bank in the United Kingdom for about seven and a half years in a variety of roles, most recently as managing director, chief transformation office.
For more than four years, Papanikolaou worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland in the United Kingdom, first as head of strategy and transformation for corporate banking, then as head of operational excellence and strategic initiatives for corporate banking.
Papanikolaou has previously worked with Accenture, a provider of information technology services and consulting, as well as PwC and as a software developer in the United States.
