Westpac and Tyro Join Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone

In an exciting development, Westpac and Tyro Payments have become the first major banks to embrace Apple’s ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone’ capability. This feature allows business customers to accept in-person iPhone payments, eliminating the need for separate devices.

The introduction of this capability by Apple now enables merchants to accept a range of payments, including Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and various digital wallets, using their iPhones. To activate the feature, Australian businesses and merchants can simply download a supporting iOS app on an iPhone Xs or a later model running iOS 16.4 or later.

Once activated, merchants can seamlessly conduct transactions directly through their iPhones, without requiring additional payment devices. Furthermore, it is expected that ANZ Worldline Payment Solutions, Stripe, Till Payments, and Zeller will also adopt this feature in the coming months.

Westpac’s chief executive for consumer and business banking, Chris de Bruin, highlighted the convenience and speed of onboarding business customers to ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone.’ He mentioned that customers can be onboarded within minutes using only an iPhone and the Westpac EFTPOS Air iOS app. De Bruin emphasized that this capability is especially beneficial for businesses that operate on the go or require mobile staff, such as tradies, delivery drivers, hairdressers, mechanics, florists, and many others. Westpac’s strategy is aligned with providing easy, safe, and reliable payment solutions that drive business efficiencies.

Tyro Payments, an Australian fintech company, has also introduced the ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone’ feature for its business customers. Tyro’s CEO, Jon Davey, expressed excitement about the new offering, which will be available through the Tyro BYO App. This feature provides greater flexibility for staff working onsite or on the move.

The collaboration between Westpac, Tyro Payments, and Apple’s ‘Tap to Pay on iPhone’ feature is set to revolutionize the way businesses accept payments, offering convenience, efficiency, and mobility for merchants and their customers alike.
