WA to build whole-of-gov emissions reporting platform

The government of Western Australia is developing an online platform for state agencies and government trading enterprises (GTEs) to report their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions against reduction targets.

The tender for the “interactive online greenhouse gas emissions tracking and reporting system” was issued by the Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER). The platform will track the progress of around 100 agencies and GTEs in implementing individual emissions reductions to support the state’s target of reducing CO2 emissions to 80% of 2020 levels by 2030.

The 100 organizations covered by the system reportedly produce an average of 7.3 million tonnes of emissions annually. End users will be able to report, analyze, calculate, and track their emissions sources through an online dashboard-style interface, with the cloud-based database collecting scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, as well as both energy-related and non-energy-related emissions sources.

The first phase of the one-year contract will consist of initial system scoping, design, configuration, and pilot testing, with the second phase involving connecting all government agencies to the emissions tracking system, and the third phase covering the operation and maintenance of the system over the remaining contract term.
