Vocus and Aussie Broadband Gain Ground in NBN Market as Telstra and TPG Slip

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released its latest NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report, revealing notable shifts in the broadband market during the June 2023 quarter.Vocus and Aussie Broadband emerged as the frontrunners in this period, collectively adding close to 62,000 services to their portfolios.

Vocus expanded by over 33,000 services, propelling its market share to 7.9 percent, while Aussie Broadband secured over 28,000 services, now commanding a 7.5 percent market share. Smaller broadband providers also exhibited growth, with Superloop capturing a 3.1 percent market share and Southern Phone attaining 1.4 percent.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasized that this sustained growth among smaller broadband providers underscores consumers’ ongoing demand for innovative and competitive services.

Telstra and TPG experienced declines

In contrast, Telstra and TPG experienced declines totaling nearly 76,000 services during the June quarter, resulting in market shares of 41.5 percent and 21.7 percent, respectively. Optus maintained a stable market share at 13.1 percent.

The report highlighted the enduring popularity of the 50 Mbps speed tier, commanding 44.2 percent of the market, despite a drop of approximately 650,000 services in this quarter. This decrease was offset by an uptick in the number of wholesale services for both the 25 Mbps and 100 Mbps speed tiers. This trend was largely shaped by the conclusion of short-term wholesale discounts for the 50 Mbps tier, driving broadband providers to explore more cost-effective service delivery methods.

Satellite services witnessed a decline, losing around 4,500 services

Furthermore, the report revealed that nearly 55,000 premises received upgrades to higher-capacity fiber-to-the-premises services during the June quarter. Conversely, satellite services witnessed a decline, losing around 4,500 services or 4.8 percent during the same period.

In terms of bandwidth supplied to wholesale access seekers, NBN Co reported an increase to 3.12 Mbps per user during the June quarter, up from 3.01 Mbps in March 2023 and significantly higher than the 2.84 Mbps per user recorded in June 2022.

ACCC Commissioner Brakey attributed this rise to retailers acquiring greater network capacity per service from NBN Co, primarily to meet consumer demand during the peak hours of 7 to 11 pm.
