VMware and chipmaker Broadcom have extended the deadline for their US$61 billion (A$89 billion) acquisition by 90 days.

The deal’s new “outside date” is May 26, according to the filing.

The Broadcom-VMware partnership was one of the most significant announcements of 2022, signalling the chipmaker’s effort to diversify into the business software industry.

Broadcom’s decision comes as regulators around the world tighten their scrutiny of technology transactions.

Britain’s competition authority announced in January that it had begun the first phase of an inquiry into the acquisition, while EU antitrust officials resumed their examination in February and will decide whether to clear or ban the merger by June 7.

According to a representative for Broadcom, acquisitions are usual.
