Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways Partnership Takes Off to deliver chapter flights and boost $3 billion in Tourism. Australian travellers are set to enjoy more affordable flights and greater travel options as Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways deepen their strategic partnership. The Australian Government has approved Qatar Airways Group’s 25% stake in Virgin Australia. The partnership will improve cooperation between the two airlines.  

The partnership will see Virgin Australia return to long-haul international flights, with services from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to Doha starting in June 2025, followed by Melbourne in December 2025. These flights are operated using Qatar Airways aircraft. Meanwhile, they are expected to drive down airfares. The airlines will provide connections to over  100 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Economic and Tourism Benefits

The collaboration will inject $3 billion into Australia’s visitor economy over the next five years. The partnership will benefit tourism and local businesses in Australia. Virgin Australia CEO Jayne Hrdlicka highlighted the partnership as a “major win for Australian consumers,” offering more choice and value for travellers.

Jobs and Opportunities

The alliance also opens doors for Virgin Australia staff, who are highly interested in secondment opportunities for pilots and cabin crew at Qatar Airways. This move supports job growth and career development within Virgin Australia.

Both airlines have committed to sustainability, signing a Memorandum of Understanding to advance initiatives like Sustainable Aviation Fuel and environmental management.Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer expressed confidence in the partnership, emphasising its potential to deliver world-class service and healthy competition.

With final regulatory approvals pending, the Virgin Australia-Qatar Airways alliance marks a new era for Australian aviation, promising significant benefits for travellers, the economy, and the industry.
