Victoria Fire Rescue is looking into a security incident.

Fire Rescue Victoria has revealed that a cyber-attack is to blame for their IT failure.

The organisation reported an issue with its dispatch system, phones, Internet connectivity, and email yesterday.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, acting commissioner Gavin Freeman said the systems could be down for “three or four days.”

He claimed, “FRV became aware of an IT outage of our systems in the early hours of [Thursday] morning.”

I received the call sometime between four and five in the morning “The decision to shut down the systems, he continued, was made at 7.30 am.

Our security has been breached. The federal government and the rest of the government have been asked to help.”

Radios, cell phones, and pagers are being used by the organisation to “get the fire trucks out the door.”

Freeman said: “I’m not aware of any communication from anyone. I’m not sure if it was a ransomware attack. We’re currently attempting to determine what brought about this.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre and our partners in the State and Federal Governments, including them, are cooperating with us round-the-clock as we respond swiftly to this issue.

“FRV will share additional information when it becomes available.”
