Victoria extends real-time occupancy data to buses

The Ride space occupancy tool will now provide live passenger data from some of Melbourne’s busiest bus routes. Ride space is a free online tool that lets commuters know about train trips. Passengers use this application to know about passenger volumes on different platforms and stations.

This new service will allow passengers to view the crowd status of buses in real-time. To plan their trips, passengers can see available buses on given routes.

Eleven bus routes to take part in the trial

Initially, the trail will take part on eleven bus routes. However, it will take place in other places as well in future. The routes known as “most high-frequency and high traffic routes“. Which are 190, 402, 404, 420, 431, 432, 471, 498, 552,601 and 623 across Melbourne.

To collect passenger’s data, counting sensors and predictive modelling technology is used. Moreover, Myki tab tabs will be used to project occupancy levels.

Further, according to The Guardian, Ride Space launched in February 2021. The data is available directly via Google maps.

Third-Party App

The agency is considering a third-party app for its functions. Moreover, Ben Caroll, Public Transport secretary said that the addition of real-time bus occupancy data to the online tool Ride space would mean more Victorians could plan their journey.

He said, ‘’ Ride Space is already helping Victorians check how busy or quiet the train network is and for the first time, bus passengers can now choose the services they feel most comfortable taking.’’

He further added, ‘’ by trialling this information on 11 initial bus routes, we are shaping the way new transport information is prevented to Victorians and learning how passengers want to receive it.’’

Indeed, this initiative is a great step toward modern transportation and facilitates Victorian passengers in their daily routes.
