Today we sit down with Sarah to learn a bit more about her inspiring journey as an entrepreneur.

Q: How did you get started as an entrepreneur? What was your motivation?

Sarah: I left my senior corporate marketing role when I had my first child and didn’t want to go back to such a rigid working environment. So I started freelancing. However, within a few months, I had more work than I could do myself. That’s when I started outsourcing to trusted subcontractors. Things grew and grew until I finally felt confident enough to hire a proper employee at the end of 2020. By the start of 2023, I had established a business with 23 people on the team.

Q: What entrepreneurial tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive?

Sarah: That’s a hard question to answer as I really don’t feel like I have it figured out. Some days I’m hyper-productive if I’m focusing on something I really love. Other days I really should just leave my desk and go for a nap. It really depends on my mood and how much I’ve got on. I guess the answer is that I’m super focused when I have a busy day ahead of me and that’s what allows me to stay productive.

Q: How do you stay organized with such a busy schedule?

Sarah: Hire an EA! Seriously, that’s the only way I’ve been able to stay organised. My delightful ADHD brain makes it incredibly difficult for me to stay organised, so I need the outside help.

Q: If you had 3 wishes, what would you ask for?

Sarah: No war – peace for all humans and animals. There’s too much hatred out there.

Stability – after such a hectic few years, we could all use a very stable period for a while, I think.

Acceptance – more acceptance of everyone’s differences and finding joy in each other’s shared experiences.

Q: What motivates you?

Sarah: A sense of purpose, financial stability, my team, and my family.

Q: What is one of the best or most worthwhile investments you’ve ever made?

Sarah: Investing in the cultural side of the business – building a genuinely nice culture that is purposeful for us all working here. That has been not just worthwhile, but vital for my business and I believe it’s how we can all bring our best to the table.

Q: What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs invest their time in?

Sarah: I would say, invest in picking a few trusted advisors/thought leaders and forgetting about the rest of the noise out there. Also, focus on meditation and pacing yourself. Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint – even though it always feels like a sprint.

Q: What is your ‘one-sentence’ piece of advice you’d like to give to someone who wants to become an entrepreneur, coach, or business owner?

Sarah: Make sure you LOVE running a business, and not just doing the thing that the business is known for. They’re completely different skill sets and you will be most successful if you can fall in love with the running of the business more than the reason you started the business in the first place.
