Q. What was your biggest startup challenge?

Jessy: The most significant challenge we faced with FLAG was carving out our unique niche in the market. We weren’t just introducing our services; we were educating potential clients about the essence of what we do and its critical importance.

Given that our target market tends to be risk-averse, we had the dual task of demonstrating our value and dispelling apprehensions related to the unfamiliarity of our offerings.

Q. What steps did you take to overcome it?

Jessy: Our primary strategy was to let our results speak for themselves. Projects managed by us consistently outperformed the national average in terms of success rates. Alongside this, we embarked on an educational journey, publishing 3-4 blog posts weekly to shed light on our niche market. Historically, this domain was dominated by engineers, but we identified that most challenges arose from a lack of program controls.

Our approach is more aggressive and mission-driven compared to many in the industry. We firmly believe in exceeding client expectations, and this belief has been validated as our reputation has grown organically. The testament to our dedication is evident in the fact that people recognize our unparalleled work ethic.

Q. What did you learn?

Jessy: Our journey has been filled with invaluable lessons. We realized that the foundational principles that drive success in the military, such as hard work, determination, teamwork, exceptional performance, and a positive attitude, are equally potent in our industry.

This realization is reflected in our workforce, with 95% being veterans. We intend to maintain this composition, emphasizing the transferable skills and values that veterans bring to the table.

Furthermore, we discerned a pressing need for our services. With the unprecedented growth rates in counties, cities, and municipalities, local staff are struggling to keep up with the demands of executing capital improvement bond programs.

This challenge presents an opportunity for us, as we possess the unique qualifications to address this need effectively. We are not just in the right place at the right time; we are the right team for the task.

One of the most profound realizations for me has been the sheer fact that we are still in business. While it might seem like a simple achievement to some, the gratitude I feel for every day we operate, the chance to make a difference, collaborate with our remarkable team, and impact our community is immeasurable. It’s been a dream realized.

Q. What are your favorite tools for running the business?

ChatGPT: This tool has been a game-changer for both me personally and for our firm. Whether it’s for reporting, drafting emails, or expanding our knowledge base, ChatGPT has quickly become an indispensable resource. Its capabilities have streamlined many of our processes, making our operations more efficient.

Google Workspace: The suite of products offered by Google, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Drive, has been invaluable. Not only are they cost-effective and intuitive, but they’ve also enabled us to develop collaborative projects and workflow systems with our clients. These tools have brought about increased accountability, transparency, and efficiency in our programs, all at a minimal cost.

Apple Ecosystem: I must admit, I was once a skeptic. For years, I couldn’t grasp the unwavering loyalty many had for Apple. However, after getting my first MacBook, I was converted. Now, almost all our computing devices are from Apple (with the exception of phones). The seamless integration, user-friendly interface, and robust performance are just a few reasons why our team is gradually shifting towards Apple. It’s amusing to think that I now share the same enthusiasm for Apple that I once found perplexing in others.

Q. What is your vision for the legacy you want to leave?

Jessy: In terms of legacy, I aspire for our team to leave a mark as someone who not only revolutionized industry practices in our industry through innovation and hard work but also as an individual who deeply valued community, collaboration, and genuine passion in every endeavor.

Q. What advice would you give to someone starting their entrepreneurial journey?

Jessy: For anyone starting their entrepreneurial journey, my best advice is to deeply love what you do and embrace hard work, as both passion and relentless effort will guide you through the inevitable challenges ahead.
