University of Melbourne to Lead Research Center for Renewable Energy Power Grid

The University of Melbourne is set to play a pivotal role in advancing the development of a fully renewable energy power grid in Australia as part of the Electric Power Innovation for a Carbon-Free Society (EPICS) Centre. This research center, co-led by the University, aims to address the challenges of clean energy production and storage and accelerate the transition to a carbon-free electric power sector. With the backing of global partners and multi-million-dollar investments, EPICS seeks to contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions worldwide.

EPICS Centre Overview: The EPICS Centre, part of the National Science Foundation Global Centres in Climate Change and Clean Energy program, will facilitate collaboration between Australia, the USA, and the UK to tackle climate change challenges and drive the shift towards net-zero emissions.

Leading the Australian Arm: The Australian sector of EPICS will be spearheaded by CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), with the University of Melbourne serving as the technical lead. Professor Pierluigi Mancarella, Chair of Electrical Power Systems at the University, will lead the Australian team, alongside Monash University.

Global Carbon Emission Challenge: The global electric power sector currently accounts for 42% of carbon emissions worldwide. The EPICS Centre aims to overcome challenges hindering the development of large-scale renewable energy grids, which are vital for substantial emission reduction.

Ambitious Renewable Transition: The transition to a 100% renewable energy power grid is essential to decarbonize the global electric power sector and support the broader decarbonization of sectors such as transportation, heating/cooling, and industry.

Multidisciplinary Approach: EPICS will employ a multidisciplinary approach, combining computing, economic strategies, engineering solutions, and progressive policies to drive change in a timely manner.

Global Collaboration: The Center will collaborate with international institutes in the USA and UK to address pressing scientific challenges related to the energy transition towards net-zero emissions.
