UniSuper has completed 60 percent of the cloud shift

UniSuper has made significant progress in its digital transformation journey by migrating 60% of its workload to the cloud. The superannuation fund has successfully moved almost all non-production workloads from its data centers to Google Cloud using the Google VMware Engine (GCVE) managed service, with assistance from partner Kasna. UniSuper plans to shift away from its data centers in Port Melbourne and Mitcham and take advantage of the scalability and agility offered by the cloud. By adopting a lift-and-shift approach, UniSuper aims to quickly scale its environment, support potential business growth opportunities, and enhance member value. The decision to choose Google Cloud was made after evaluating multiple cloud providers based on the required functionality. This migration aligns with UniSuper’s technology strategy of scaling and simplification and supports its evolving business strategy, which includes attracting members from outside the higher education and research industry and pursuing inorganic growth opportunities. The migration is expected to be completed by September, with non-production systems prioritized to minimize disruptions. UniSuper recognizes that not all applications are ready for native cloud adoption and opted for a safe and efficient solution that aligns with its short-term needs and overall business objectives.
