Following a six-month term as interim CIO, the federal Treasury has selected Heath Axelby as its next permanent CIO.
Following a brief executive search, Axelby was permanently appointed to the top role at the beginning of this month.
Since former CIO Mike Webb became the department’s major IT projects branch assistant secretary in April 2021, he has served as temporary information services branch assistant secretary.
Both sections report to the chief operating officer division within the corporate and international investment group.
Webb served as CIO for two and a half years before officially succeeding Eamonn Rooney in November 2018. Rooney is currently a delivery transformation executive at the Department of Defense’s ICT delivery division, recently led by another former Treasury CIO, Peter Alexander.
Axelby, who joined Treasury in July 2018, “brings a plethora of expertise to the post,” according to a department official.
It is unclear what Axelby held at the department before he was appointed interim CIO last year.
Last fiscal year, Treasury introduced a new federal payments management system to streamline agency payments to states and territories.
According to the Treasury’s most recent annual report, other IT projects completed in recent years include a desktop modernization project.
