Transforming Gut Health: An Interview with Supergut Australia’s Founder David Robinson

David Robinson, the visionary founder of Supergut Australia, is dedicated to transforming the landscape of gut health products. Recognizing the pivotal role that gut bacteria play in overall well-being, David has positioned Supergut Australia as a leader in offering high-quality, effective solutions for achieving optimal gut health. Under his guidance, the company has become a beacon of excellence, making gut health accessible to all.

Today, we sit down with David Robinson to learn more about Supergut Australia and his journey as an entrepreneur.

Q. What inspired you to start Supergut Australia and focus on gut health?

David: I learned about the gut microbiome and its impact on health by watching a TV show. The host interviewed a mother whose child was treated with a fecal transplant for a disease called clostridium difficile infection. The treatment worked, and I decided to try to find something similar for my ailing parents and brother who suffered from a list of chronic diseases. I developed Supergut to offer products that can support gut health and help reduce the effects and prevalence of gut-related diseases by supporting the beneficial bacteria we already have in our gut.

Q. Could you elaborate on the significance of gut health in maintaining overall wellbeing?

David: It sounds simplistic, but if the gut isn’t healthy, the person can’t be healthy either. So many of our essential functions are controlled or influenced by the gut, and these functions must work properly for overall health and wellbeing. There are two really good examples of this: immune response and serotonin production. Both of these functions are performed primarily within the gut environment.

Our immune system is designed to attack viruses and bacteria it does not recognise in our bodies – this is an essential function for our survival. But when the immune system malfunctions it becomes chronic and starts to damage the body. Numerous diseases are linked to this condition and it has severe long-term health consequences. Disruption of the gut can lead to a chronic immune response.

Serotonin is essential to regulating emotions and many behavioural functions. It impacts our stress response, anxiety, mood, temperament and many other aspects of our mental wellbeing. 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. If the gut malfunctions and is unable to produce sufficient serotonin, the human being starts to suffer.

Q. What specific benefits do Supergut products offer to consumers?

David: Our large intestine is saturated in bacteria. There are trillions of them inside us, and without them, we would not exist. While the science of the microbiome is really in its infancy, there are aspects of this ecosystem that have been revealed over the past 20 years or so, and light is beginning to shine on how important this organ is for our health.

What has been revealed through this research is that there are certain types of bacteria that can convey a profound health benefit. They are our own personal pharmacists working very hard to keep us healthy. If we support these bacteria then they multiply, and we can be healthier.

These bacteria depend on certain types of fibre and starches, and it’s these ingredients that we have combined into our products. The idea of Supergut is to resource the bacteria that do us good, to provide a health benefit to the human and to discourage bacteria that do us harm.

Q. How does Supergut ensure the effectiveness of its products in promoting gut health?

David: The ingredients selected for Supergut Repair and Supergut Everyday Fibre are thoroughly researched. They have been selected based on papers published by independent researchers looking at the impact of soluble fibre on the gut microbiome. Our ingredients are sourced from food-grade manufacturers both in Australia and from other regions. Our products pass through a rigorous testing regime by a certified manufacturer.

We have conducted small-scale trials of our products using microbiome sequencing. For both products, we saw an improvement in key markers of gut health including beneficial bacteria ratio, and butyrate production. We are completely satisfied that the products convey the benefit as predicted by the clinical research. Because our products are food grade only we are careful not to promise a health benefit, but the ingredients are known to do so, and we are receiving continuous positive feedback from our consumers.

Q. Could you explain the importance of butyrate production in gut health?

David: Butyrate is this magical metabolite that confers a long list of benefits. The primary function is as an energy source to power the regeneration of the gut lining to ensure its integrity and eliminate leaky gut. And that is just the start – it also helps to modulate the immune system which helps to inhibit chronic inflammation, and then when it passes into circulation through the gut it helps to combat inflammation throughout the body, including crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Butyrate is produced in the gut by a specialised family of bacteria that work together to break down fibre and starch. The fibres and starches they need are the primary ingredients of Supergut Repair. The product also includes antioxidants which can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation (and they taste good).

Q. What makes the Supergut formulation process unique?

David: Through our manufacturing partners we have been able to source the highest quality fibres from around the world and combine them into palatable blends of pure fibre. The ingredients are selected for their proven ability to support beneficial bacteria in the gut and improve gut function.

We have added no colourings, sweeteners or flavours to ensure the purity of the product. We have also made the quite deliberate decision to make these products affordable for the typical consumer, rather than capitalise on the hype surrounding high-end gut health products.

Q. Considering wellness trends are constantly evolving, why do you believe gut health remains an essential focus?

David: The importance of gut health has been in our collective consciousness for 2,400 years when Hippocrates, considered the father of modern medicine, claimed that all disease begins in the gut. Since then, medical research has tried to determine the mechanisms of the gut, and it has only been since the advent of supercomputers 25 years ago that the gut microbiome has really been revealed.

We believe that the knowledge gained so far, and what’s coming in the near future will revolutionise healthcare and the way we think about disease prevention. We think it will be possible for humans to live disease-free, happy and healthy for their whole lives by learning how to support their body and mind with good gut health.

Q. Looking ahead, what developments or innovations can we expect from Supergut Australia?

David: Our ambition is to mainstream prebiotic dietary products and help give the category the profile it deserves. While many consumers are familiar with probiotics, vitamin supplements, protein shakes, etc., relatively few people are aware of prebiotics and how important they are for overall health and wellbeing.

We hope to partner with food companies and distributors to develop consumer-friendly gut health products that can be enjoyed with convenience every day. We also look forward to more people becoming aware of the importance of gut health and deciding to take their health into their own hands.
