Tim Smith, a Victorian Senior Liberal MP, has resigned from the shadow cabinet after drinking and driving on his way home from a dinner yesterday night.
Smith issued a story this afternoon announcing his resignation from the shadow cabinet, stating that he “made a significant mistake of judgment. After being involved in an automobile accident yesterday night, he gave an evidential breath test result of 0.131, more than two and a half times the legal limit. According to authorities, police were called to Power St in Hawthorn just after 8.55 p.m. on Saturday, October 30th, after reports of a car colliding with another vehicle and then crashing into a fence. “The driver of the car, a 38-year-old Kew male, came back positive for alcohol and was transported to a police station, where he returned an evidential breath test result of 0.131,” according to a police statement. “The man’s license was immediately stopped, and he will get an infraction notice for exceeding the prescribed alcohol concentration.” The incident resulted in no injuries.
Smith stated in his statement that he felt he was under 0.05. “Last night, I committed a terrible mistake in judgement,” it says. “I thought I was under the legal limit to drive home after dinner with friends.”
Smith revealed to authorities that he had a positive BAC when stopped over, disclosing that he had been punished and his license had been revoked for a year. “I sincerely apologise to my voters, colleagues, family, and the people of Victoria who expect their elected representatives to act with integrity.” “I presented my departure from the Shadow Cabinet to the Leader of the Opposition today, and he accepted.”
