The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a nonregulatory agency under the US Commerce Department, has announced the formation of a public working group focused on generative artificial intelligence (AI). The group aims to leverage the expertise of technical volunteers from both the private and public sectors to explore the opportunities presented by generative AI while addressing the associated risks.
NIST Director Laurie Locascio emphasized the timeliness of establishing this group, considering the rapid speed, extensive scale, and transformative potential of generative AI in various industries and society as a whole. Generative AI, which has the ability to generate text and images, has gained significant attention from regulators worldwide who are striving to develop regulations governing its use. Its impact has been likened to that of the internet.
US President Joe Biden recently expressed the need to address the risks posed by artificial intelligence to national security and the economy. He stated his intention to seek expert advice on the matter.
