The Project Highclere cable lay is prepared by Vocus.

Vocus is prepared to begin constructing an undersea cable that will link the Australia-Singapore Cable and the North West Cable System (NWCS), two already-existing cable networks (ASC).

According to Jarrod Nink, chief executive for wholesale and international, the Project Highclere link has “now gone into the deployment stage” at the Submarine Networks World conference in Singapore.

Nink stated, “The cable has been produced and loaded onto the ship, ready to be dropped into the Indian Ocean.

A link “from an existing stub cable of the NWCS (about 41 km north of Port Hedland) to an offshore existing branching unit of the ASC (approximately 450 km west of the Exmouth Peninsula) will be deployed at Highclere,” according to regulatory documents.

“This new undersea cable system would enhance our current coastal and interior fibre networks, connecting Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. The 1600 km East Coast Cable System will have up to 24 fibre pairs, making it the biggest undersea fibre count system we’ve ever deployed, according to Nink.

The value of the East Coast Cable System, according to Nink, has been made clear by recent natural disasters, will also be increased by the addition of a third route to Vocus’ current east coast redundancy.

A 13-fold increase in capacity on eastern state regional lines and a 5-fold improvement on the Brisbane-Sydney and Sydney-Melbourne-Adelaide routes are also on Vocus’ list of upgrades for the upcoming three years.

“Our clients will have access to 400 gig services after these enhancements are finished.
