Suzie Cardwell has been appointed as Nine’s first Chief Data Officer, with the objective of expanding data utilization across the media group. This move by Nine is part of its efforts to enhance targeted advertising capabilities, leverage first-party data, and compete with global platforms in the digital video market. As the single point of accountability for data at Nine, Cardwell will oversee governance, strategy, and planning in this domain. She will report to Alex Parsons, Nine’s Chief Digital Officer. Parsons expressed confidence in Cardwell’s extensive experience and leadership in data strategy and planning within the media market, emphasizing her suitability for driving Nine’s data strategy. Cardwell herself is excited about leveraging Nine’s substantial existing data asset to foster innovation, enhance consumer experiences, and fuel business growth. Nine’s CEO, Mike Sneesby, noted in the company’s annual report that they are still in the early stages of their data journey, despite making significant progress. Sneesby highlighted the revenue potential derived from the large number of users engaging with Nine’s network and the opportunity to gather data and intelligence on user habits and preferences for content analysis and targeted advertising. The report also outlined investments in analytics capabilities, including the introduction of single sign-on and the deployment of VirtualOz for data integration and analysis. Nine aims to compete with global platforms such as YouTube and Facebook in the digital video market, which is valued at over $3 billion. Cardwell brings over 20 years of experience in media, digital, and data roles to her new position, having previously worked at Scentre Group, News Corp, and Foxtel in various leadership roles.
