The NSW government is taking a cautious approach to generative AI

The New South Wales (NSW) government plans to implement artificial intelligence (AI) technology in a “deliberate but cautious” manner, considering citizen trust in data and AI usage.

Dr Ian Oppermann, NSW government chief data scientist, emphasized the importance of trust and the need to demonstrate trustworthiness through appropriate and responsible use of data, digital, and AI.

He stressed the need for frameworks to address the grey area in between what is acceptable and what is not.

AI is seen as a tool driven by data, and the government plans to move forward with AI use while being clear about what, when, and how they do it.

While the surge in generative AI has the NSW government excited about its potential, it is also aware of the impact of over-personalization and is thinking about the limits of how personalized service delivery from the government should be.

Oppermann also highlighted the NSW AI assurance framework, AI ethics policy, and AI strategy, which provide principles and policies for AI use in NSW.
