The Australian federal government is considering making the tech sector more accountable for insecure products, as per the statement by the cyber security minister, Clare O’Neil.
Speaking at the Australian Information Security Association’s Cyber Conference, O’Neil said that the community currently bears too much risk and the government is looking to change that.
One of the measures being considered, with the support of the expert advisory board, is creating a legislative framework that would shift cyber security risks away from vulnerable members of the community towards those who are better placed to manage it, including software and cyber security service providers, technology developers, and telecommunications firms.
O’Neil also highlighted the need for businesses to improve cyber security and understand its importance as a competitive advantage. The aim is to raise the cost of cybercrime and improve the government’s information sharing on threats and incidents, with better alignment of industry responsibilities to manage cyber risks.
