The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) has chosen Tim Whiteley, an internal candidate, as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead its technology initiatives. The role was established to provide focused executive oversight and accountability for ASX’s enterprise-wide technology renewal program. Whiteley will assume the position in July and will be responsible for ASX’s technology functions, data security, data governance, technology infrastructure, and the implementation of its multi-year technology modernization program.
Previously, Whiteley served as ASX’s Project Director and led the next phase of the CHESS replacement project, which recently shifted away from blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) as its underlying technology. ASX’s Managing Director and CEO, Helen Lofthouse, stated that Whiteley’s appointment ensures continuity in technology leadership for the CHESS replacement project. His expertise in technology and project execution within the financial services industry will be invaluable as ASX aims to modernize its technology and enhance critical market infrastructure.
Lofthouse emphasized that Whiteley will continue to lead the design team for the CHESS replacement solution while also establishing a new leadership structure for the program. As CIO, he will assume responsibility for the technical aspects of the CHESS replacement initiative. Throughout the search process, Dan Chesterman temporarily assumed CIO responsibilities in addition to his role in delivering technology and data solutions for ASX. Chesterman will now continue as Group Executive for Technology and Data, focusing on ASX’s enterprise data capabilities and expanding its customer-facing technology and data business.
Lofthouse expressed gratitude to Chesterman for effectively managing two significant executive roles and noted that the transition will allow him and his accomplished team to concentrate on driving innovation in new areas of data and technology.
