TGA Proposes Limiting Purchase of Paracetamol to Two Per Person, Restricting Age of Purchase

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is proposing to place new restrictions on the purchase of paracetamol-containing products. If the proposals are implemented, consumers would be limited to purchasing no more than two packs of paracetamol at any one time and would need to be aged 18 years or over to purchase the product.

The TGA is proposing new restrictions in an effort to reduce the number of overdoses and accidental poisonings associated with paracetamol. Overdoses of paracetamol are a significant cause of liver damage and death in Australia, with around 150 people dying each year as a result.

The Administration is also concerned that many people are unaware of the potential risks associated with taking too much paracetamol.

Paracetamol is one of the most commonly used medications in Australia and is available over-the-counter without a prescription. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including pain, fever, and headaches.

The medicine is safe when used as directed, but it can be harmful if taken in large doses or if it is taken regularly for long periods of time. Overdoses of paracetamol can cause liver damage and can be fatal.

The NSW Poisons Information Centre reported 3575 cases of intentional paracetamol poisoning last year.

While 1417 out of 3403 overdoses recorded by Victoria’s service were reported as deliberate.

The TGA panel found that intentional overdose is highest among adolescents and young adults, and more common among females.

The TGA’s proposal is aimed at reducing the availability of the medication to those who are most at risks of harming themselves with it, such as young people and heavy drinkers.

It is also hoped that the new restrictions will make it easier for pharmacists to provide advice on the safe use of the drug.
