Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OneWeb in March, Telstra has agreed to deploy three teleports for OneWeb’s Southern Hemisphere services.
Telstra will construct and operate teleports in Darwin’s Tivendale and, eventually, Toowoomba’s Charlton and Perth’s Wangara.
The Darwin teleport is set to open in July, with the other two following in 2022. Telstra confirmed that the Darwin ground station’s construction is complete, with 14 antennas in place.
“The only remaining work is on the OneWeb side to make the site operationally ready,” a Telstra representative stated.
Each site will offer ground station support for OneWeb’s satellite fleet, according to the company.
Telstra will offer continuing monitoring and quality assurance services at each location after the teleports are installed.
Vish Vishwanathan, Telstra America’s VP for wholesale and satellite, stated that “teleports are complex sites requiring access to secure and robust infrastructure as well as on-the-ground experience, which Telstra has delivered to OneWeb throughout this project.”
