As children’s mental health and online safety concerns arise, tech bosses are to testify in Washington. Meta’s Mark Zuckerbergh and Linda Yaccarino of X are among the tech owners to testify for children’ safety. According to sources, the politicians have high concerns regarding the tech companies. These companies are not doing enough for child protection. Neither helping in making online presence safe.

These owners will explain what they have done so far in this regard. Meanwhile, heads of other social media apps such as TikTok, Discord and Snap will also testify over the safety concerns.

This is for the first time that many of these tech company owner’s are testifying before congress. However, Mr. Zuckerbergh and Shou Zi Chew TikTok chief voluntarily agreed to testify. However, legal notice was sent to X Linda Yaccarino and Discord boss Jason Citron including Snap Chief Evan Spiegel to testify.

Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham announced and also said that the parents of the kids demand action from these tech companies. Meta’s has brought over 30 tools to support a safe environment since last testimony.

Online Safety Concerns

The hearing was prompted by several factors, such as the reports of whistleblowers who exposed the harmful practices and policies of some platforms. Also,  the testimonies of survivors who suffered from online abuse. Meanwhile, the lawsuits that have been filed against some tech firms for their alleged negligence and complicity.

The hearing also aimed to discuss the legislative proposals that have been introduced to regulate and hold accountable tech companies for their role in protecting children online. One of these proposals is the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), which was sponsored by Senator Josh Hawley and endorsed by Snapchat. The bill would require platforms to implement age verification and parental consent mechanisms, as well as to remove harmful content within 24 hours.
