Tabcorp is expected to become one of Australia’s largest corporate adopters of the Google-created open source UI toolkit Flutter, which will underlie its mobile, online, and retail operations.
The gambling firm is rewriting its TAB app, website, and retail terminals to utilise a single codebase rather than the “several of dozen” codebases now in use, which include native iOS, Java, and Kotlin.
A 230-person project team has been created, including developers from Tabcorp and Accenture, with Google also pitching in.
Ayten Ozenc, general manager of technology at Tabcorp’s Wagering and Media division, told iTnews that the company’s combined aims were to “create seamless” omnichannel experiences for consumers while simplifying its underlying technology.
“We’re the first Australian wagering firm to use Flutter in a genuine omnichannel sense,” Ozenc explained.
“Part of my agreement with this specific partner was that they would use my team and train my team how to execute it,” Ozenc explained.
With a more consistent client experience in sight, Ozenc is also starting to see additional programme benefits emerge.
Creating multi-platform experiences with a single codebase, in particular, necessitates that apps have a comparable composition in terms of microservices, boosting code reuse.
In the long run, Flutter should assist Tabcorp in shortening the product release cycle, reducing the complexity of regulatory involvement, and saving money.
