Sydney Under Lockdown But Still Struggles To Contain Rise In Number Of Positive Cases

The major Australian city, Sydney, has seen the largest daily increase in Covid cases as compared to the last few months in-spite of the fact that it is under lockdown restrictions for nearly 14 days now.

The New South Wales state government has reported 38 cases in the capital, on Friday. This brings the total number of cases of this Delta cluster to be more than 370.

The authorities said the residents were seen breaking isolation rules by visiting other homes.

The state government has asked residents to follow the rules of lockdown.

Premier Gladys Speaks

“We just need people to stop interacting for this lockdown to work,” said NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.

She added that people with symptoms of the virus were also seen moving around in the community and these activities increase the spread of the virus.

The number of cases announced on Thursday became the highest in the city since the past 14 months.

Lockdown Restrictions

Australia’s largest city Sydney is home to five million people. It has been placed under lockdown restrictions until the 17th of July. In the surrounding areas, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong, the affect was more prominent.

In accordance with the rules, people are allowed to leave their homes to go shopping, and exercise. Small business and bug businesses such as restaurants takeaways, and specialty retailers will remain open.

Earlier this week, authorities have been forced to extend the lockdown for a week as the number of cases did not fall during the last week, there were approximately 18-35 people new cases per day.

Rise In Cases

While the majority of these arise in the houses of the infected people who have been in isolation, there are still a large number of community-transmitted infections.

“These numbers are too high. We need to control these numbers, ” said the premier.

Critics say that the message of the government cannot be effectively reached to non-English communities and also that a lot of people rely on informal work which can’t be done from one’s home.
